How To Make Faux Ocean Jasper with Polymer Clay – Step by Step

Posted by Rituparna Ghosh on

Materials:

  • Translucent Polymer Clay (Any brand, I used Premo)
  • Alcohol inks: coffee/brown, yellow tone, orange
  • Black polymer clay
  • White polymer clay
  • Pasta machine (or acrylic roller)
  • Ball tools (one large, one small)
  • Sharp tissue blade
  • Backing clay (black, brown, or scrap)

Step 1: Create the Translucent Color Sheets

  • Condition the translucent clay
  • Roll it out on the thinnest setting of your pasta machine.
  • Divide into three equal pieces.
  • Color each sheet with one alcohol ink shade: coffee, yellow, orange. Let dry.
  • Roll each coloured sheet again through the pasta machine on the thinnest setting.

Step 2: Stack and Reduce

  • Randomly stack the three coloured translucent sheets.
  • Pass the stack through the pasta machine on a medium setting.
  • Cut the stack in half, place halves on top of each other, and roll again.
  • Repeat the cut-and-stack process 2–3 times until you see soft blended layers.

Step 3: Prepare Black & White Contrast Sheets

  • Roll out one sheet of black clay and one sheet of white clay on a thin setting.
  • Layer them together and roll again until smooth.
  • Cut this sheet to match the size of your translucent stack.
  • Place one sheet on top (white side facing up).
  • Place another sheet at the bottom (black side facing down).

Step 4: Add Jasper-Like Texture

  • Using a large and small ball tool, press random dips and impressions into the clay stack
  • These indents will form the round, organic “stone” layers typical of Ocean Jasper.
  • Compress the clay back into a square block shape.
  • Let it rest for 10–15 minutes so the clay firms up slightly.

Step 5: Slice and Build Your Veneer

  • With your sharpest tissue blade, slice off very thin sheets from the block.
  • Lay these slices onto a sheet of backing clay (any colour or even scraps).
  • Gently roll flat with an acrylic roller or pasta machine.
  • Start at the thickest setting and gradually reduce to 2–3 mm thickness

Step 6: Use Your Jasper Sheet

  • Cut veneers for jewelry, beads, or decorative elements.
  • Bake according to your clay brand’s instructions.
  • Sand and buff for a buttery shine, or add a thin layer of resin for extra gloss.

Result: A richly layered, organic faux Austrian Jasper sheet, warm browns, yellows, and oranges framed with striking black and white contrasts.
